APRIL 2012 - The Titanic Centenary Week


April 11th-15th Sea Safari will be running tours from Cobh during the Centenary Week 9th-15th April. These tours will take in the sights and sounds of Cork Harbour, and visit the area where the last passengers boarded the Titanic, whilst getting the wind in your hair in the 12 man boat. April 2012- New this month in the Heritage Centre is an exhibition describing life on board the luxury liner The Titanic, our collection of White Star Line ware and cutlery is also on display. Details of the building of the ship and some carpenter's tools form part of this exhibition which also includes the pressure gauge which was used in the sea trials for Titanic.

8th April 2012 to 8th May: Beginning from the 8th of April "Bonny Cummins" will display her unique paintings in the Commodore Hotel. Bonny held a close relationship with "Millvina Dean- the last survivor of the Titanic. Bonny has taken her inspiration from Millvina in creating these pieces of the Titanic at Queenstown. Many of the works were co-signed by Millvina, who loved Cobh. Also featured is a painting inspired by the story of Patrick Kidney, Postmaster at Queenstown one of the last to leave Titanic April 11th 1912 in his official capacity.

10th April 2012: Irish Ancestry Research Centre Genealogy - IARC will hold a workshop in the Commodore Hotel at 12pm. This workshop is suitable for anyone with a keen interest in their family history. IARC will show you how to trace your ancestors on the Titanic using passenger lists in conjunction with other available sources. 9th to 15th April: Maritime Fair - During the days of this centenary week, like any other week of any other year, visitors and locals alike can mingle around the many shops, restaurants and pubs in this idyllic and unique sea-side town. For this special week, Cobh will also be home to stalls and markets set up in designated areas where visitors can relax and enjoy many styles of food and other things on offer.

 

11th April 2012: A National Tribute 2-5pm - Exactly 100 years on from when the Titanic arrived in Cork Harbour and the last of the passengers and supplies boarded her, Cobh will play host to a national tribute which will include a commemoration ceremony and a fleet review from the Irish Navy.

President of Ireland Michael D.Higgins will attend this National Tribute along with other prominent dignitaries to oversee a Naval Fleet Review. This is a once and a lifetime opportunity to show respect to all those who lost their lives.

All are welcome to this special occasion.


11th to 14th April 2012: "An Irish Connection": A series of flagship concerts are schedules to take place from 7.00pm to 9.00pm from the 11th to the 14th of April. These outdoor concerts which will feature prominent musicians and performers will tell the story of the Titanic's connection with the Island of Ireland through many genres of music. The line up of international artists will include Cara O'Sullivan Cathy Jordan and Paul Byrom. The concerts will take place in Cobh in the Promenade by the waterfront. There will be exclusive ticketed seated area for premium viewing for which tickets are now on sale. The concert will run nightly from 7pm-9pm beginning on the 11th of April, the day the Titanic sailed from Cobh and finishing on the 14th of April, the night when the Titanic hit the iceberg.

Tickets for the exclusive seating area are limited and available online at www.tickets.ie, from the Titanic 100 Cobh 2012 Office, 3 Westbourne Place, Cobh and from the Irish Examiner Office on Lapps Quay Cork. Tickets are priced at €20.00 each excluding on-line booking fee. Restricted viewing standing areas on the street adjacent to the concert are also available at no charge.

 

April 11th- Eddie English will run a special Day Yacht Sail on Wednesday April 11th, 09.30-17.00. This leisurely sail will visit many parts of Cork Harbour, view beautiful Cobh from the sea, Spike Island, Haulbowline, Roches Point under the guidance of Eddie who is well-versed in local maritime history. He will stop at the Titanic anchorage and pay respects. Lunch is included onboard. 11th to 14th April 2012: Titanic Rowing Challenge: Come and see Rushbrooke Rowing club row for 82 hours in the town centre, in a bid to raise support for local charity “Breaking the Silence. Each participant will row for 5 hours over 4 days to retrace the journey time that it took for the Titanic to reach the Iceberg.

 

 

11th and 12th April: Titanic Dinner Evening: Gilberts Restaurant in Cobh will be hosting a special Titanic Dinner evening with replica of the 1st class menu available during Titanic's maiden voyage. Due to phenomenal demand, the 11th and 12th have been fully booked out. The Special Titanic dinner evening has been extended to Tuesday the 10th of April.

 

 

12th to 13th April 2012:MV Marco Polo - An overnight visit from Cruise & Maritime Voyages MV Marco Polo on her special Titanic cruise, arriving 4.00pm on the 12th of April and departing at 5.00pm on the 13th. A warm welcome and open air entertainment will be provided during their stay.

 

 

12th April 2012: Titanic's Last Waltz: 12 noon, Sirius Arts Centre: Flemish ensemble Grupetto bring an authentic and historically truthful reconstruction to the music played during the last night aboard the Titanic. 12th April 2012: Commodore & Castletown Choirs

Castletown Church Choir has been singing in St Joseph’s Church Castletown Kinneigh as far back as anybody can remember. Members of other denominations join with the choir for special occasions such as carol singing, visiting hospitals etc. Seamus Crowley is the choir director. Mark Murphy is the organist, with Colum Cronin on guitar. Currently, this choir is enjoying a particularly vital & vibrant period. Colum Cronin singer/songwriter from Coppean in West Cork has written and advised Titanic Remembered for this special occasion Which will be performed on the main stage in the promenade On Thursday at 3pm.

The male members of the choir recently sang backing vocals on Colum Cronin’s ‘Titanic Remembered’ song. Musical Director is Sheena Mahon of the Commodore Male Voice Choir. The Commodore Male Voice Choir was established in the early ‘60s as Verome Cork Dockyard Choir closed. Singing local venues for charities and hosted choirs from all over the world.

14th April: Veteran and Vintage Car Run and Show: This special veteran Vintage and Classic Car Run will commemorate the tragedy of the sinking, on her maiden voyage, of the "unsinkable" Titanic. This 20-mile run will start at the Commodore hotel in Cobh, with a pit stop in Fota and running on to Midleton for lunch. The run includes a free tour of the Jameson Distillery


14th April: National Search and Rescue Display - by the Irish Coast Guard. This display will be held in the afternoon and is a must see for the entire family as it promises to be a search and rescue extravaganza with a difference..........

 

14th April- Carillon Memorial- Many of the 123 passenger who embarked on the RMS Titanic at Queestown are believed to have attended Mass in St. Colman's Cathedral before boarding that ill-fated liner. It is therefore fitting that those who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy should be especially remembered at Cobh's famous Cathedral. Adrian Gebruers will commence playing the Cathedral Carillon at 11.40 pm on Saturday 14 April marking the precise moment one hundred years on when the Titanic struck the iceberg. The programme will include Chopin's funeral march and the hymn "For Those in Peril On The Sea". The short recital will conclude with the hymn "Nearer MY God To Thee", believed to have been played in the final moments by the liner's eight-man orchestra, all of whom perished.

 

15th April: Titanic Remembrance Service - An ecumenical church service to mark the 100 year century of the Titanic tragedy will be given in St. Colman's Cathedral, Cobh at 2p.m. This will be followed by a wreath-laying and closing ecumenical service in the centre of Cobh town at 3:30p.m.

15th April: Great Island 10 Road Race: This year's race will take place on April 15th at 10.30am again for the benefit of the Irish Cancer Society, with special emphasis on pallitive care. Taking in some of the most beautiful scenery that the Great Island of Cobh and Cork Harbour has to offer, the route also poses a challenge to the serious runner and occasional runner/ walker a like while at the same time helping cancer support. A 5km walk will also take place on the same day for those less inclined to run and who want to show their support.

 

15th-21st April: Titanic Lunch- Gilberts restaurant in Cobh will run a Titanic Lunch from the 15th-21st April. The menu will include meals which were served in the 3rd class quarters of the Titanic. A different menu will be in place for each day.


20th -21st April: Titanic 100 Cobh Golf Classic. A special golf tournament will be hosted by Cobh Golf Club. A large Gala Dinner and prize-giving by a well known Sport Celebrity, music and other entertainment will be held on the evening of the 21st of April. 20th -21st April: Two day Titanic Lecture Series: A series of lectures investigating many aspects of the Titanic story. Organised by the University College Cork, this series will deliver lectures by many well-known authors and lecturers including Professor John Wilson Foster.
